Video: The Altar Server

A new incredible video on being an altar server.  This would be an incredible video to show when teaching on the Mass.

I don’t understand why the altar in this video faces away from the assembly. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, are we going backwards?

    • Gabriel Castillo

Actually the second Vatican Council never called for the mass to be celebrated facing the people. In the Missal that the priest uses at Mass it actually presupposes that he is facing the liturgical East and makes comments like “now facing the people… do xyz”. It is not that he has his back towards the people… it is that they are going to God together. The Mass isn’t about a dialogue between priest and people it is about the priest leading the people in the Sacrifice to God the Father. 🙂

and why is it only from the male persective? I coordinate servers and have been one for 15 years as I was called to become one right after I got confirmed. This might as well be an Altar Boy Video not server.

    • Gabriel Castillo

Why from a male perspective? Because I was the only person willing to make the video and I happen to be a man. It applies to all genders, but in the document on the Sacred Liturgy Redemptionis Sacramentum paragraph 47 states “It is altogether laudable to maintain the noble custom by which boys…provide service at the altar. Nor should it be forgotten that a great number of sacred ministers over the course of the centuries have come from among boys such as these…Girls or women may also be admitted to this service of the altar…”

See girls are allowed, but boys become priests and it is good for the boy to be a server as he discerns his vocation.

I believe that Eric posted the video because it promotes the dignity and mystery of the Mass. God bless you! Pray for vocations!
